Maharashtra Day & Gujarat Day – Celebrating Culture, Unity, and Progress

1st May holds a unique significance in Indian history as it marks the formation of two culturally rich and progressive states — Maharashtra and Gujarat. On this day in 1960, the former Bombay State was divided on linguistic lines into these two states, giving rise to what we now celebrate as Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day.

It’s a day to honor the deep-rooted traditions, freedom movements, economic progress, and the vibrant spirit of the people of these two states.

 The Historical Significance

After India’s independence, the demand for reorganization of states on the basis of language gained momentum. The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 set the stage, but it was through mass movements like the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and Mahagujarat Movement that the Bombay State was eventually divided into:

  • Maharashtra – where Marathi is the primary language

  • Gujarat – where Gujarati is predominantly spoken

The official formation took place on 1st May 1960.
