Devshayani Ekadashi: The Beginning of Chaturmas and Lord Vishnu’s Slumber

 What is Devshayani Ekadashi?

Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant days in the Hindu calendar. It marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a four-month holy period when Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is believed to enter a deep, cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra) in the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk).

Devotees believe that from this day until Prabodhini Ekadashi (in Kartik month), Lord Vishnu rests, and thus, no auspicious ceremonies like weddings, engagements, or housewarmings are performed during this time.

 The Legend Behind Devshayani Ekadashi

According to Hindu mythology, on this Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu lies down on the cosmic serpent Sheshnag in the Ksheer Sagar to rest for four months. This period is symbolic of inner reflection, penance, and devotion.

It is said that during these months, all divine activities slow down as the gods rest and rejuvenate. The Chaturmas period is ideal for spiritual growth, fasting, and restraining worldly pleasures.

 Spiritual Significance

Devshayani Ekadashi is not just about abstaining from food—it's about spiritual discipline. Here’s why it's considered so powerful:

  • Helps cleanse sins and bring peace of mind

  • Marks the start of a season of devotion, fasting, and self-control

  • Symbolizes surrender to God and seeking His protection during uncertain times

  • Devotees often start vows like reading religious texts (e.g., Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita) or giving up certain habits during Chaturmas

 How is Devshayani Ekadashi Observed?

1️⃣ Fasting and Prayers

  • Devotees observe a strict fast—either waterless (nirjala), fruit-based, or with a single meal of Satvik food

  • Lord Vishnu is worshipped with Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, lamps, and incense

  • Devotional songs, bhajans, and Vishnu Sahasranama recitation are common

2️⃣ Night Vigil (Jagran)

Many devotees stay awake through the night singing kirtans, meditating, or reading scriptures.

3️⃣ Avoiding Auspicious Events

As Lord Vishnu sleeps, no new ventures or weddings are performed during Chaturmas. It's considered a time for introspection, not celebration.

4️⃣ Pilgrimage and Processions

In Pandharpur (Maharashtra), a massive procession called the Wari Yatra takes place, where devotees walk barefoot to the Vitthal temple chanting hymns. It is one of the biggest spiritual events in the region.

 Devshayani Ekadashi and Chaturmas

Chaturmas begins with Devshayani Ekadashi and ends with Dev Uthani Ekadashi. It includes four lunar months—Ashadha, Shravan, Bhadrapada, and Ashwin. These months are considered perfect for:

  • Fasting and penance

  • Charity and religious observance

  • Detachment from worldly desires

 Conclusion

Devshayani Ekadashi is a time of spiritual awakening, even though the Lord Himself is believed to be asleep. It’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, and focus on devotion, discipline, and dharma.

As we step into Chaturmas, let us use this sacred period to cleanse our hearts, deepen our connection with the divine, and walk on the path of righteousness.
